Nonsuicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) Behavior in Adolescents: The Contribution of Peers

Adolescence is a period of identity exploration marked by phenomena such as Nonsuicidal Self-Injury (NSSI), including cutting and hair-pulling, often triggered by peer modeling and social media challenges. This study examined the contribution of peers to NSSI behavior among 390 adolescents (aged 12–18) in Pasuruan, selected through purposive sampling. NSSI was measured using Pachkowski et al.'s scale and peer relationships using Santrock's scale; data were analyzed using simple linear regression in SPSS 27. The results showed that peers made a significant contribution to NSSI behavior in adolescents, indicating that the closer and more influential adolescents’ peer relationship are, the more likely they are to imitate self-injurious behavior modeled by their friends. These findings highlight the importance of developing peer-based prevention and intervention programs in schools to address adolescent self-harm.
