Community Empowerment in Waste Management to Produce Eco-Enzymes and Derivative Products in Malaka Regency

Household organic waste remains an environmental issue in Malaka Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. Most of the waste is disposed of or burned, causing pollution and health problems. One simple and environmentally friendly solution is to use organic waste to produce eco-enzymes, fermented liquids that can be used as natural cleaners, liquid fertilizers, and organic pesticides. This community service activity aims to enhance the public's understanding of and skills in managing organic waste by producing eco-enzymes and their derivatives. The implementation method includes preparation, socialization, participatory training, assistance with fermentation, and evaluation using a pretest–posttest design. The activity was attended by 31 participants, consisting of housewives, health cadres, and local youth. Evaluation results showed a significant increase in participants' understanding of waste management, eco-enzyme production, and the utilization of its derivative products. The greatest improvement was observed in the understanding of eco-enzyme derivative products, which were previously not widely known by the community. In conclusion, the eco-enzyme training was effective in empowering the community while providing a sustainable solution for household organic waste management in Malaka District.
