Implementation of the Drill Method Using the Kitab Durus Al-Lughah Al-Arabiyyah at the Imam Al-Ghazali Dormitory of Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School

Most students at the Imam Al-Ghazali Dormitory, Nurul Jadid Islamic Boarding School remain more comfortable communicating in Indonesian despite an ongoing Arabic language program — indicating a gap between passive and active competence. This study aims to describe the implementation of the drill method using the Durusul Lughah Al-Arabiyyah textbook in improving students' mahārah kalām. A descriptive qualitative approach with an interpretivist paradigm was employed. Research subjects consisted of ustadz, musyrif, and students as informants. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña with source triangulation, methodological triangulation, and member checking. The findings show that the drill method was implemented through three stages: review, introduction of new material, and paired muhādatsah. Its contribution to mahārah kalām is multilayered — a shift from reliance on mental translation toward more spontaneous language production, reduced affective filter, and transfer of textbook material into daily communication. The effectiveness of this method works optimally only as part of a coherent learning ecosystem integrating the drill method, the textbook, and bi'ah lughawiyyah
